The Eamses were fascinated by the question of how to produce a high-quality, mass-produced chair with a one-piece seat. They first looked at plywood, but that tended to split in the forming process, and then they tried aluminium, but that was cold and noisy, and then they hired a boatbuilder to make two prototypes in fibreglass - and their problem was solved.
When I stayed in the Ace Hotel in Seattle for the first time in 2010, there was a fibreglass rocking-chair in my room, and it proved to be the most comfortable chair I'd ever met. The first few days of my visit were very rainy, but I was very happy sitting by the window with my free hotel coffee and my books, looking out at the rain and doing some gentle rocking. I learned afterwards that the chair was a reproduction of this Eames RAR design. One can buy such a reproduction fairly cheaply, but unfortunately it just would not go with the style of my flat.
